The Perfect Skiathos Itinerary
How to spend 5 unforgettable days discovering beaches, island life, history and the quieter side of Skiathos.
Skiathos may be a small island, but deciding how to spend your days here can be surprisingly difficult. More than 60 beaches, pine-covered landscapes, historic sites, boat trips, traditional tavernas and the lively streets of Skiathos Town can easily fill a holiday much longer than a weekend.
The best Skiathos itinerary, however, is not about seeing as much as possible. It is about finding the right balance between discovering the island and actually enjoying it. A morning exploring can turn into an afternoon by the sea; a boat trip can be followed by a long dinner; and sometimes the best plan is simply leaving enough time for somewhere unexpected.
For a first visit, five days offer an excellent introduction. Here is how we would spend them.
DAY 1 — START WITH KOUKOUNARIES
There is no need to begin your holiday by crossing the entire island. If you are staying in Koukounaries, one of Skiathos’ most celebrated landscapes is already on your doorstep.
Start your first morning slowly at Koukounaries Beach, where golden sand meets the pine forest that has become one of the defining images of Skiathos. Behind the beach lies the protected Strofilia lagoon, adding another layer to a landscape that feels remarkably green even at the height of summer.
Spend the morning swimming and settling into island time rather than immediately filling the day with sightseeing. Afterwards, explore the wider Koukounaries area or head towards nearby beaches before returning for a relaxed evening.
This first day is deliberately simple. You have arrived in Skiathos. There will be plenty of time to explore it.
YOUR FIRST EVENING IN KOUKOUNARIES
Greek summer evenings deserve as much space in an itinerary as beaches and excursions. Dinner rarely needs to be rushed, and some of the most memorable holiday moments happen around a table long after the sun has disappeared.
At White Bar Taverna, evenings move naturally from dinner to drinks and, on selected nights, live entertainment and events. Depending on the day of your stay, that might mean Greek BBQ Night, live music or Mamma Mia Movie Night.
It is an easy introduction to the rhythm that will follow for the rest of the week: days for exploring, evenings for enjoying.
DAY 2 — DISCOVER SKIATHOS TOWN
After a first day by the sea, spend the next discovering the island’s capital.
Skiathos Town is compact enough to explore without an ambitious schedule. Wander through its narrow streets, stop for coffee, explore the shops and eventually make your way towards the Old Port. Rather than treating the town as a checklist of attractions, give yourself enough time to experience the atmosphere that makes it the social heart of the island.
The waterfront becomes particularly lively later in the day, but there is plenty worth discovering before evening. Traditional houses, small churches and winding streets sit only moments away from the busier harbour.
WALK TO BOURTZI
Extending between the old and new ports, Bourtzi is one of the easiest places to add to a walk through Skiathos Town. The small pine-covered peninsula offers views towards the harbour and surrounding coastline and provides a welcome change of pace from the streets nearby.
It also makes a natural stopping point before continuing through town or settling somewhere for an early evening drink.
Stay into the evening if you can. Skiathos Town changes character after sunset, when restaurants fill, people gather around the harbour and the streets remain busy well into the night.
DAY 3 — SEE SKIATHOS FROM THE SEA
By your third day, it is time to change perspective.
A boat trip is one of the classic things to do in Skiathos, and with good reason. Much of the island’s northern coastline feels dramatically different from the accessible southern beaches, and seeing it from the water reveals landscapes that roads simply cannot.
Many excursions travel around parts of the island and include swimming stops, depending on the route and sea conditions. One of the best-known destinations is Lalaria Beach, famous for its white pebbles, clear water and dramatic rock formations.
Access to Lalaria is by sea, which makes the journey part of the experience. Conditions can affect routes, so it is always worth checking locally before planning your day around a particular stop.
LEAVE THE EVENING UNPLANNED
After spending much of the day at sea, resist the urge to add another excursion.
Return to Koukounaries, take your time getting ready and let dinner become the evening’s only plan. A good Skiathos itinerary needs space between the places you want to see. Otherwise, a holiday can quickly begin to feel like another schedule to complete.
DAY 4 — EXPLORE THE OTHER SIDE OF SKIATHOS
This is the day to leave the island’s most familiar route behind.
Skiathos has a noticeably wilder character once you travel away from its busy southern coastline. Forest roads, quieter beaches and broad northern landscapes reveal a side of the island that visitors who stay exclusively around the main resort areas can easily miss.
Depending on how you are travelling and current access conditions, build the day around one or two destinations rather than trying to collect beaches.
Mandraki Beach, Asselinos and Kechria each offer a different perspective on the island’s natural landscape. The journey through the countryside is part of the experience, so allow enough time to stop, explore and change your plans if somewhere catches your attention along the way.

DAY 5 — HISTORY, FORESTS AND THE SKIATHOS COUNTRYSIDE
After several days dominated by the coastline, spend your final full day discovering what exists inland.
Begin with the Evangelistria Monastery, set among the green hills above Skiathos Town. The surroundings alone make the journey worthwhile, but the monastery also offers an opportunity to discover part of the island’s cultural and religious heritage.
From here, the countryside opens into old roads and walking routes through forests and hills. This is another Skiathos entirely: quieter, greener and seemingly much further from the summer crowds than its actual distance from the coast would suggest.
Travellers who enjoy walking can dedicate more of the day to the island’s network of trails, while those travelling independently can combine the monastery with stops elsewhere in the interior.
IF YOU HAVE MORE TIME: DISCOVER KASTRO
For travellers with enough time and the appropriate route planned, historic Kastro offers another glimpse into the island’s past. The former medieval settlement occupies a dramatic position on the northern coast and feels worlds away from modern Skiathos Town.
It deserves enough time to appreciate both its history and its setting, which is why we would rather treat it as an extension to your itinerary than squeeze it into an already busy day.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE ONLY THREE DAYS IN SKIATHOS?
A shorter trip means making choices, not trying to compress five days into three.
For a first visit, we would keep Koukounaries, Skiathos Town and one day on the water. Together they provide three very different impressions of the island: its famous natural landscape, its town and harbour life, and its coastline from the Aegean.
The quieter northern beaches, countryside and historical sites can then become very good reasons to return.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE SEVEN DAYS IN SKIATHOS?
A full week changes everything because you no longer need to choose between exploring and slowing down.
Use the five-day itinerary as a foundation, then leave two days intentionally flexible. Spend another day discovering smaller beaches, follow one of the island’s walking routes, return to somewhere you particularly enjoyed or simply dedicate an entire day to doing very little.
You could also use the additional time to explore more of the Sporades by sea, depending on available excursions and conditions.
The luxury of seven days is not fitting more into your holiday. It is having enough time not to.
HOW TO GET AROUND SKIATHOS
The southern side of Skiathos is relatively straightforward to explore using the island’s transport options, while travelling towards more remote northern and western areas can require additional planning.
The best choice depends on your itinerary. If most of your plans involve Skiathos Town, Koukounaries and stops along the southern route, you may not need independent transport every day. If you want to explore forest roads, remote beaches and the island’s interior, having greater flexibility can make a considerable difference.
For walking or driving towards less accessible areas, always check current local conditions before setting out rather than relying entirely on an online map.
WHERE TO STAY FOR A SKIATHOS ITINERARY
Where you stay can significantly change the rhythm of your holiday.
Koukounaries works particularly well for travellers who want easy access to the beach while remaining within reach of Skiathos Town and the island’s western landscapes. Instead of beginning every day in the busiest part of the island, you can wake among the pine trees, spend the day exploring and return somewhere noticeably calmer in the evening.
At Mandraki Village Boutique Hotel, this balance between exploration and relaxation is part of the experience. Koukounaries Beach is close by, the western side of the island invites further discovery and days out can end back among the hotel’s gardens, pool and White Bar Taverna.

THE BEST ITINERARY LEAVES ROOM FOR SKIATHOS
There is a temptation when visiting somewhere new to turn every day into a list. Skiathos rewards a different approach.
Plan the places that matter to you, but leave room for the beach you decide not to leave, the road you did not intend to follow, the lunch that lasts until late afternoon or the evening that continues because nobody is ready to go home.
Five days can introduce you to Skiathos. Seven can reveal much more. But whichever itinerary you choose, the moments you remember may well be the ones that were never on it.
